Salt Dough Christmas Decorations
Make some Christmas decorations which will last for years, using a simple salt dough recipe you can make some really exciting decorations for your tree.
You will need:
- 1/2 cup of salt
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1 cup of flour
- Pastry cutters
- Rolling pin
- Ribbon or string to hang the decorations
Put the salt and flour into a bowl, then add the water slowly. Use your hands to bring the mixture together. After about ten minutes of kneading, it should form a soft ball. If it’s slightly too sticky, add more flour and if it’s slightly too dry, add more water. You can colour the dough at this stage if you don’t want to paint them later. Add some paint to the dough mixture and fold it in until it is all the same colour. This stage can get very messy so make sure you have prepared your surfaces and are wearing the appropriate clothes.
Roll out the dough with a rolling pin and use your pastry cutters to create a range of shapes. Don’t forget to make a small hole in each one so that you can hang it on the tree later.
You can also add some texture or patterns to your decorations at this stage. Try making a pattern with a cocktail stick or seeing what pattern is left behind when you roll some lace or paper doily on top of your dough.
The decorations will harden if just left out in the air but this can take about 48 hours. Alternatively bake them in the oven at 100C for 3-4 hours. You may need to turn then and check that the hole for the ribbon doesn’t close over.
Leave them to cool and then decorate. Use paint and glitter to make them as colourful as you want. You can paint them with a layer of PVA to varnish once finished. This will make them last that little bit longer.
